Located in Michigan, Dr. Jolene Charbeneau is leading the way in providing early childhood consultation, professional development, and solutions. She understands that the quality of your workforce is the single biggest factor impacting your success.

Dr. Jolene Charbeneau has over 20 years' experience in education. She has held many different positions including preschool teacher, board member, professor, manager, administrator, and researcher. She has devoted much of her career to Early Childhood Consultation and Professional Development. Her research on Multilingual Learners has been published in a peer reviewed journal. She was one of the primary authors of the latest version of Michigan's Early Childhood Standards of Quality. Dr. Charbeneau has also published an article on Family Engagement with Multilingual families in Exchange Magazine. Dr. Charbeneau has a passion for early childhood that includes promoting advocacy for early childhood education including making childcare accessible to all families and a sustainable career for early childhood professionals. She is a Board Member of the Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children and servers on the Policy and Awards Committees. Additionally, Dr. Charbeneau has presented her research locally, nationally, and internationally.

This training will cover what next steps you can take to expand your career in early childhood education including resumes, marketing yourself, job hunting, interviewing, and of course networking! Tips and resources will be shared so that you can make the most of your early childhood career.

In this session you will learn about the foundations for supporting multilingual learners. How children develop first and second languages will be discussed. The presentation will be through an asset-based lens of the strengths that multilanguage learners possess and how teachers and caregivers can grow upon those strengths. Additional topics to be covered are how to set up your classroom to support multilingual learners, making connections between home language and culture and engaging multilanguage learners through music and movement.
Objectives:

• Make the connection between language and culture.
• Define an assets-based approach to language.
• How to create an inclusive classroom environment.
Session Abstract:
In this training you will learn classroom practices for teaching Multilingual Learners (MLLs). Topics will include research on school readiness development, language, math, literacy, and social emotional skills, as well as small group learning. Additionally, there will be a concentration on language and early literacy skills for MLLs that will cover focusing on the home language in the classroom, developing vocabulary, phonological awareness, word recognition, print knowledge, and early writing. You will leave this training with the skills and knowledge to assist the MLLs in your classroom to have a successful head start in their education.

Considerations for strengthening relationships of multilingual families will be address with ideas on how to build those all-important relationships. Considerations to be covered are awareness, building trust, advocacy, and communication.

• Learning communication skills to help communicate with multilingual families.
• Trust building skills for building relationships with multilingual families.
• Being aware of multilingual family’s needs.
• How to advocate for multilingual families.
Session Abstract:
This session will cover research that was conducted by Dr. Andriaschko using Head Start teachers and education coordinators to explore their perspectives regarding the support teachers need to meet the challenges of working with dual language learners. Framework and research design will be covered in the session, along with the results of the study and recommendations for future research.
Session Abstract:
Now more than ever as caregivers and educators we need to understand the social emotional development of young children. In this training you will learn about infant and toddler social emotional development and how the development unfolds from birth to 36 months. The presentation will take you from the basics of emotional brain development to skills for joining in play. With key insights on how to comfort a crying baby or calm a toddler in tantrum, you will leave this training with the knowledge and wisdom to build and grow the social emotional skills of the children in your care.
